Wednesday Grab-Bag: A New Setting from Birthright's Rich Baker, New OSR Zines, and More!

A quick post to point out some things you may have missed:

1. Rich Baker of Birthright fame has combined forces w some other industry vets to launch a Kickstarter for a new campaign setting, Primeval Thule. Check it out here. Cool thing about it is you can order it for 4e, 13th Age, or Pathfinder, so it should appeal to a lot of gamers.

2. I mentioned before that the legendary OSR zine "Footprints" has returned from a lengthy hiatus. Well, they seem to really be back on track, bc there is already another issue out! Check it out here

3. The unrivaled star of the show at Free RPG day was Lamentation of  the Flame Princesses' Better Than Any Man. I was happy to have backed the Kickstarter for it; it is a great accomplishment. It is now available for "pay what you want" at RPGNow. Check it out.

4. Speaking of great accomplishments, Richard J. LeBlanc, Jr.of New Big Dragon Games has launched an excellent OSR zine that is also priced at "pay what you want". More info can be found here.

Lots of great stuff going on!

  1. I like Rich Baker and David Noonan and would love to support their project but the prices are WAY too high. $40 for the PDF? Seriously? That should be the price for the hardcover. $10-25 for a teaser.....PDF? Unbelievable. I hope they make their funding, but I wouldn't pay $40 for a PDF for anyones work sight unseen honestly, save maybe Gygax himself.

    1. I agree the price is on the high side. At the same time, unlike many kickstarters I have pledged to, I trust that these guys can accomplish what they say. Supporting this also sends a message that gamers like to see multiple game systems supported. Finally, they say on their page that if you buy one pdf, you get the pdf for all three systems. A lot of folks play both 4e and 13th Age, so it isnt quite as steep looking at it that way. That said, yeah it is basically on the fringe of what I would pay. Thanks for the post!

  2. That's a fair point. I do trust them both. But $40 for a PDF. Just can't do it. And the setting looks nice enough too, if a bit overplayed. I just fear they won't make their goal but not because people don't want to support them, but because they're just asking too much. There are tons of settings out there and most are perfectly good while being system neutral. I think if they made the PDF $20 and the hardback $40, they'd have already met their goal. I buy a ton of PDFs and even $30 PDFs are pretty rare. When you see a $30-40 PDF, it's something like The Worlds Largest Dungeon or Ptolus or Tome of Horrors complete. I'm talking 800 page PDFs.

    2. That's too bad but not surprising. I'm honestly surprised they didn't see this coming from a mile away. Who knows, Maybe it will get a big burst at the end. They can always try again with more realistic pricing that reflects actual going market rates. I've seen lots of comments across the web that people are passing on this due simply to pricing. :(

  4. Looks like Primeval Thule might actually fund. Somehow they found about 10-12 backers willing to jump in for $500-$2500 each. They must have called in some big favors.

    1. I hope it makes it; I appreciate that they are making it for multiple game systems. They seem to have really bulked up the $40 level rewards; looks like a lot of good content.
